JCPOA: WORST DEAL EVER?

-Diki Tsomo Sherpa, Aapur Sijapati (IAEA)

The representative of USA claimed JCPOA (Iran Nuclear Deal) to be the worst deal made till date during formal session in IAEA today, reluctant to explain why for quite some time. The delegate found the agreement to be highly flawed for reasons such as JCPOA being a short term solution to the ongoing Iranian crisis. Indeed, USA believed that this deal may be the worst deal made yet.

USA  repeatedly expressed its dissatisfaction towards this agreement. Furthermore, the delegate believed that Iran cannot be trusted, and that JCPOA does not prevent war, it only delays it. The representative of USA, along with the representative of Israel, thought that the JCPOA is not as important as it is made to be, and that reforms should be made. This, however, was not supported by most of the international community.

Russia, Iran and most of the other representatives in the committee stood together, arguing against the need for reforms. Meanwhile, the Iranian representative accused Israel of interfering in matters that only the IAEA is allowed to look into when the topic of documents of Iran’s supposed future nuclear plans came up.

Update:

After a lengthy and heated debate, the IAEA finally came to the conclusion of negotiating a reform of the JCPOA. However, there were still some problems that arose due to the unwillingness of Israel provide compensation to Iran for their previous actions.

Despite their earlier hesitance to reform the JCPOA, the only conditions proposed by the delegate of Iran for their cooperation was USA and Israel providing compensation to the country for placing economic sanctions over them, and acting as a threat to their security. In response to this, the representative of USA asked Iran to provide a report semi-annually, explaining the investments made from the compensation provided.
