The representatives of the Russian Government today in the SPECPOL committee announced the nation’s willingness to accept ‘Climate Refugees’ into their nation. The representative stated that Russia would grant the Western and lesser populated regions of the country to these environmental migrants and would even go as far as to provide employment opportunities and equal rights as well. The question of the identities of these refugees, however, has been brought up.
As per the statement, the refugees will be given basic human necessities alongside government provided programs to aid the self sufficiency of these individuals within Russia. The government has proposed introducing the migrants to fishing as a baseline job due to its prominence in many of the island states, with progression in occupational ranks scaling with time and experience. However, the refugees in exchange will be labelled as Russian citizens themselves- a point insisted upon by the delegate to have the migrants legally present in the country. Additionally, it was also said that the original nationality would, at best, still be present “at heart” due to how a concrete nation may not be present for the migrants to return to.
The suggestion sparked slight controversy as other delegates juggled the options of the potential humanitarian crisis this would address, versus the clear loss of identity of these Island natives. In response, Russia further backed their point by also stating how the Islanders would be able live as citizens in comparison to many other countries that offer only temporary residence. Moreover, the natives would be allowed to work in government posts, participate in voting and enjoy all the benefits that any other Russian national would.
