UNSC: Hostility in Gaza Strip

-Bibhash Thapa and Bibhav Basnet

A third update brought the Security Council to its boiling point as concrete news about  Israeli-origin militants having been disguised as Hamas came into light. Adding fuel to the fire, the Israeli government seemed to have been significantly aware of this attack. The motivation behind the attack was allegedly to seize small parts of the Palestinian agriculture land in the Gaza strip. This created a hostile and war-like situation in the territory of Gaza with gruesome attacks on civilians and militants alike from Israel and Palestine.

Israel addressed the committee by admitting its accountability for the aggressive attacks. In addition, Israel remained adamant that there was no direct involvement of the government and is already taking necessary actions to elucidate a solution to the issue. However,  a majority of the countries present in the committee, along with major allies of Israel- US and India, condemned this ferocious act committed by the Israeli government and urged to take obligatory measures. Eyebrows were raised as the US proclaimed they would cut off financial and military aid to Israel. The intensity in the committee proliferated as countries sought out to settle this concern.

In an effort to resolve the update at hand, the delegation of China along with France and Russia proposed ideas to demilitarize the conflicted zone of Gaza as well as to demarcate the regions with borders and mobilize peace keeping forces. However, both Israel and Palestine along with major allies Iran were unable to agree upon demilitarizing the area, recognizing that the consequences could be cataclysmic. The delegation of France opted to create a buffer zone with protection of peacekeeping forces to mediate the issue and establish peace.
