MUN minus the debate

As exhilarating of an experience a Model UN might be to many, no conference is ever short of delegates who groan just at the thought of having to sit in committee, sandwiched between avid debaters who are always on each other’s throats, relentlessly shouting on top of their lungs. There certainly is no denying the fact that the true essence of an MUN lies in the debate. Every statement thrown back and forth between passionate delegates and every meticulously drafted resolution makes a Model UN that much more enriching. However, to every delegate that doesn’t really care for the debate, MUNs do not always have to be a losing battle, for so much more lies outside the general speakers lists and the monotonous moderated caucuses happening within the four walls of your committee. If you aren’t among those passionate debaters bent on winning an award this MUN, you might as well be one or more of the following:

1. The one who’s here to socialize:

You don’t have a fat binder consisting of pages and pages of research, but so what? It does not mean you cannot reap the full benefits of what MUN has to offer. Apart from the debate, social interactions are one of the most important aspects of MUN. RBS MUN 2018 has quite a number of national and international delegates ready to have stimulating conversations in and out of the committee and make friends (at least on Facebook) for a lifetime. So don’t hesitate to talk to the people in your committee. All of them are more than just delegates and you will be surprised to learn that you like the most intimidating of them.

2. The one who’s here for the puns:

There is always that one person in committee. The one at the very back. The one who spouts the most absurd jokes just when the committee seems to be spiralling into the depths of boredom. The one who gets suspended the most yet, the one the dais secretly adores, because they know the committee wouldn’t be the same without their puns and dubious anecdotes. This one is here just to have a good laugh, but bear in mind that it is very easy to cross the boundary of downright hilarious to just simply annoying.

3. The one who’s here for the food:

RBS MUN always has the most splendid delicacies. You may be the delegate who is distracted by the aroma wafting from the kitchen. You are always hungry, and keep raising points of personal privileges in a weak attempt to let the committee go for lunch. Well, this year will be a special treat for you, because not only do we have an exciting assortment of Indian and Western food, we have the Thakali Kitchen at your service.

4. The one who’s here for the fashion:

You’re that one member of your friend group who always gets compliments on how well dressed you are at every occasion and you know that RBS MUN is your place to shine. Nothing besides the hour and a half of getting ready in the morning excites you about the conference and you sit through committee with the sole intent of having the photographers take a glowing portrait of your perfect outfit afterwards. Lucky them, what else could be more aesthetically pleasing anyway?

....and maybe, for your own sake, you could look up a few things, listen to your fellow delegates and give a shot at voicing your opinions. You might be surprised to realize that you’re more like the “crazy MUN enthusiast” you so didn’t think you were.
